SA Greys out and about …

We participated in two events this month, Camp Bow Wow East’s Grand Opening on Saturday, March 4 and the St. Pawtrick’s Day Adoption Event in Vail on Saturday, March 18. Our purpose was to let people know that even though live greyhound racing in Tucson ended, we have extended our help to rehome greyhounds from tracks in Ireland and Australia. Of course, people were fascinated by our work and we had a great time spreading the word and answering questions about greyhound’s wonderful traits and busted the myths.

Neither event was overly crowded, which allowed time to visit with everyone who stopped by.

Deb Brack donated a lovely basket for us to raffle at the Camp Bow Wow event. It was filled with wonderful dog-oriented gifts. We raised almost $150 between raffle tickets and general donations … a fun day for dogs and volunteers.

The St. Pawtrick’s Day Adoption Event in Vail was a fun experience, too. The highlights were sharing with a Brownie troop about the work we do. When asked what they knew about greyhounds, the response was, “What’s a Great Hound?” The conversation that followed was fun and they left with the impression that we work with “Great Hounds,” which is true.

Mary, Colleen Browne’s greyhound, made an appearance and wore a fun, decorative donation coat. Deb Brack walked Mary through the crowd to get donations. When Deb returned to the table, she announced that somehow she and Mary were entered into a costume contest and won first prize! If you’re looking for an unusual costume, we have a few donation jackets you can borrow.

There were two raffle items at the event. Another basket filled with dog treasures and the autographed UA Men’s Basketball. We’re not sure how this happened but we sold $90 worth of basketball raffle tickets and not one ticket to win the dog basket. Between raffle ticket sales and donations, we raised nearly $130. It was a fun, crazy event yet all had a blast.

Many thanks to the two legged volunteers who helped out this month: Deb Brack, Jeanne Gacke, Colleen Browne, Gloria and Jorge Fernandez, Ann Chihak Poff, Cindy Mapelli, Frank and Sandy Bonham and the four legged volunteers: Geordie, Piper, Rudy, Uzi, Gypsy and Mary.
