Operation News – June 2026

In March of this year, I wrote about our hounds’ dietary needs. You can read it here.
My plan was to follow up with a talk about healthy weights for our beloved hounds, but Mother Nature turned up the heat, so I wrote about heat safety instead.
This month, we’ll go back to our regularly scheduled programming and talk about weight (not yours).
Is your greyhound at a healthy weight?
Greyhounds are naturally slim, so it can be a bit tricky to tell if they are overweight, underweight or perfect (even though they’re always perfect to their pawrents).
Here are some tips to guide you in understanding the weight of your greyhound:
In a healthy greyhound, you should be able to see the shadow of the last two or three ribs, and the hip bones should not be poking out.
Your dog should have a waist/abdominal tuck. From a bird’s-eye view, your grey’s body should go in. If the body does not go in at all, and is just a straight line, your grey may be overweight.
If you lightly run your fingers over their ribs, you should be able to feel them easily. If their hip bones are obviously sticking out, then your dog may be underweight.
Keeping dogs at a healthy weight is crucial for their long-term health – it can boost their energy and lower their risk of developing joint and other health issues.
If you are unsure whether your greyhound is a healthy weight, or if there have been any drastic changes to their weight or appetite, be sure to seek veterinary advice.
