Meet the Quilt Artist

Would you be surprised to learn that the greyhound quilt SA Greys is raffling off took its creator, Phyllis Schaefer, 150 hours to make?

Phyllis has been creating quilts for 40 years. She credits her artistic ability to her grandfather who designed textiles.  She chose a traditional design known as the Ohio Star pattern. If you look at the quilt, you will notice a star in each corner and a four-pointed star in the middle. Her technique begins with a sketch in which the design process probably took around 100 hours. Nothing is computer generated. She quilts in blocks using an oversized sewing machine. Years ago, a fellow greyhound adopter named Priscilla gave her a bag of greyhound t-shirts, hence, the Kanab, Greyhounds in Gettysburg (GIG), Greyhounds Reach the Beach patches, plus more.

You might think this is the hottest month of the year; I can’t think about a quilt now. Well, give it more thought. The 5×7-ft quilt fits flat on a queen bed. It’s washable on the gentle cycle then air dry. It’s also suitable for hanging as there’s a sleeve on the back of the quilt to put a rod through and hook it onto a nail in the wall. You can fold it and put on the back of your couch. Or you can gift it to someone special to whom you want to inspire a love of greyhounds or quilting.
