Operations News – March 2024

I’m fresh off my trip, where I had the privilege of visiting the lovely people and land of Australia and New Zealand. I got a real feel for what it’s like for our Aussie hounds to travel from the “land down under” to the United States, although I did ride in the cabin. Jet lag is a real thing!
While visiting “Windy” Wellington, New Zealand, I was honored to meet Lisa, the representative with Greyhounds as Pets New Zealand, along with her friend Zeus. Had my suitcase been a bit larger, he would have come home with me. **Wink**
My trip got me thinking of our hounds’ journey, whether from the track or the airport to their final destination … your home. Today, I’ll discuss one part of that process. Maybe the most important one of all.
Did you know that Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption is a foster-based group? What exactly does that mean, and how does that benefit you, the new hound adopter?
When we receive a new group of hounds, we will never again place them in a commercial kennel facility. Instead, they go directly to “Auntie Wanda’s” home to decompress while awaiting their medical examinations. From there, they go to a foster home with an experienced greyhound family to begin learning how to be a beloved pet. The foster will teach them what’s expected in the house and out walking. They will be exposed to tile floors, mirrors and glass doors. Sometimes, they will hear TV, cars, trucks, etc., for the first time. The foster will observe their unique personalities and advise us accordingly.
The fostering process enables us to set the hounds up for success and ensure they are placed in appropriate homes where they and their new adopters will thrive.
If you think fostering might be for you, email foster@sagreys.org for more information.
Are you a member of our new Facebook Owners Group? If you aren’t, you should be. Lots of good discussion about our favorite breed. Join us! Email nancy@sagreys.org for your unique membership link.
