Boot Scootin’ Summer: Why Dog Boots
Aren’t Just a Fashion Statement

Let’s be honest — most of us have chuckled the first time we watched a dog try to walk in a new pair of boots. The high-stepping dance is comedy gold. But once your hound gets used to them, those funny-looking booties become one of the best pieces of summer gear you can own.
Greyhounds may be built for speed, but those delicate feet need a little extra protection when Arizona turns up the heat. Here’s why dog boots deserve a spot in your summer adventure bag:
No More “Hot Foot!”
Sidewalks, asphalt and sand can become scorching hot in just minutes. Boots help prevent painful burns and blisters that can take weeks to heal.
Better Grip Where It Counts
Whether it’s slick tile around the pool, smooth concrete or hot pavement, boots provide extra traction to help prevent slips and tumbles.
Protection from Hidden Hazards
Glass, sharp rocks, thorns, cactus
spines and sticks are no match for a sturdy pair of boots. They’re like a suit of armor for your greyhound’s paws. Not-so-fun fact: It will cost you roughly $1,000 to have a deeply embedded cactus spine removed. Ask me how I know.
Cleaner Feet = Cleaner House
Mud, dirt, chemical residue, and who-knows-what-else stay on the outside of the boot instead of tracking through your home — or ending up on your couch.
Beach Day Approved
Planning a trip to the beach? Boots protect paws from hot sand, abrasive shells and drying ocean salt so your hound can enjoy the waves comfortably.
Keep the Creepy Crawlies Away
Boots can help reduce insect bites and stings to sensitive paws when exploring parks, trails or grassy areas.
A Cooler Way to Walk
By shielding paws from super-heated surfaces, boots help your dog stay more comfortable during warm-weather outings and reduce heat stress.
Great for Healing Paws
If your greyhound has a cut, scrape or naturally sensitive feet, boots offer extra protection while healing and help make walks more comfortable.
An Allergy Helper
Grass pollen, lawn chemicals and other outdoor irritants can cling to paws. Boots create a barrier that may help reduce exposure for allergy-prone dogs.
Happy Feet = Happy Hound
Comfortable paws mean more enjoyable walks, easier movement and a happier dog all summer long. When your greyhound isn’t worrying about sore feet, they can focus on what they do best — sniffing every interesting smell and finding the perfect spot for a post-walk nap.
And the benefits don’t stop there. Many retired racers are missing a toe or two from old injuries. A well-fitting boot can help stabilize the foot, improve balance and make every step more comfortable. If your hound suffers from those dreaded corns, boots can also provide cushioning and protection, allowing many dogs to enjoy their walks with much less discomfort.
The best part? You don’t have to settle for a one-size-fits-all boot. Greyhounds have unique “hare feet” — long and narrow paws that don’t fit most standard dog boots. Fortunately, several companies design boots specifically for sighthounds. One of our favorites is HunnyBoots, which are designed to fit the greyhound’s unique foot shape and are popular among greyhound owners for their secure fit and comfort.
So this summer, don’t think of dog boots as a fashion accessory — think of them as essential safety equipment. Whether you’re protecting paws from sizzling sidewalks, helping a senior hound stay steady or giving a corn-afflicted greyhound a more comfortable walk, a good pair of boots can make a world of difference.
After all, the only thing that should be smoking this summer is the grill — not your hound’s paws!
